SCIENCE 10
Unit 1: Chemistry
This unit investigates the underlying structure of matter and the basic chemical species. As you explore the properties of molecular and ionic compounds, including acids and bases, you will begin to appreciate the need for a classification scheme and a system of nomenclature. By the end you will be able to classify, name compounds and write balanced chemical equations to represent chemical changes.
Unit 2: Physics
This unit focuses on the first and second laws of thermodynamics. You will be investigating mechanical energy conversions and its transfer in systems where energy is conserved. You will also be exploring motion. By the end of the unit you will be able to calculate the speed and acceleration of any object.
Unit 3: Biology
This unit identifies the basic unit of life, the cell. You will explore how the cell is an example of an efficient open system comprised of a cell membrane and organelles that carry out the basic functions of all living organisms. You will learn that technological advancements in microscopy have enhanced the study of cells and cellular processes. You will also learn basic processes used by plants and microscopy skills. At the end of the unit you will be able to identify all of the parts of the cell and analyze their role, understand basic mechanisms used by plant life, and know how to properly use the microscope.
